WSU Recruiting
Four steps forward and two steps back this week
Written by OpenToClose

It was kind of a two steps backward and four steps forward sort of week for the program. The question that will be interesting over time to evaluate will be to see if the steps backward were little baby steps and whether the four steps forward were giant leaps.

First, the two steps backward…..

Did Lane Kiffin just gift us a defensive tackle?

By all accounts the recruiting class is coming together wonderfully…...except for one vexing area. That spot would be defensive tackle. We've made a run at quite a few and we had one already in the grayshirt mix. However, like recruiting does at times it seems that most of our options are falling through. Dtackle is probably one of the hardest spots to recruit for a program like us. They're a precious commodity that the national players typically snap-up early. We are usually required to grow our own. Perfect example is Justin Clayton from last year. A kid that we picked up to play tackle even though he was only 245 pounds. With a redshirt season under his belt he'll be pushing 280 by Spring ball. By the time he's a sophomore you'll have a legit 300 pound tackle.

Well, how is defensive tackle looking? Read on for more…..

Who are the WSU recruiting targets for January?
Written by OpentoClose
Monday, 04 January 2010 07:59

We are now less than one month from national signing day and things are down to the wire for WSU. Paul Wulff and the staff have been nothing short of phenomenal in pulling together this class. To acquire and hold together a class of this quality given our record is astonishing. We are continuing to see Pac-10 teams make runs at our guys and so far with zero success.

Halliday, Dunn, Cleveland, Oertel, Bucannon and Ratliff have all been offered or asked to visit by the likes of UCLA, ASU, Miami and Cal….all have so far shut them down and re-affirmed their commitment to the Crimson and Gray. The only person that we've heard of thus far that is possibly wavering is Brandon Golden. A corner commit we picked up a while back has taken one trip to Colorado with several teammates. Although we've not seen any direct quotes attributed to him, his teammates have mentioned that they are talking about all playing together if they all wind up being offered at the same school.

We've already got four players coming in to start school (hopefully) on January 8th and they ALL play along the offensive or defensive line. The two JC offensive linemen we signed chose us over Arizona and Tennessee while the defensive end we have coming in was considered one of the top five JC dends in the country last year.

All told we are sitting at about 22 players in this class. That leaves us with at least three spots and the likelihood of a few more with the likelihood of Wulff oversigning to protect against non-qualifiers academically and with possibly asking a few to grayshirt if they secure some last minute marquee players.

So, now we are down to the musical chairs portion of our recruiting. We have a limited number of seats and several offers out. Who jumps in will dictate how the board plays out. I would be surprised if you see us take any more than five guys based on numbers currently. That could change if any of the four January enrollees don't make it to Pullman.

Alright, let's take a look at who is left and who the staff is going to really save a chair for as we get closer to February.

Paul Wulff got what he wanted for Christmas
Written by EC Rules
Sunday, 27 December 2009 21:35

What is your family tradition on when you open Christmas gifts? Some families open their presents on Christmas Eve, some on Christmas morning….and a few families even open things up on Christmas evening. That last one must be torture as a kid by the way.

Apologies to our non-Christian friends, I'm just trying to create a nice angle to get to our latest and greatest verbal commitment.

On Christmas Eve, Paul Wulff got the biggest present he could have possibly hoped to receive. It came in the form of a 5'11', 190 pound running back that lives just up the road in Spokane. He runs a reported 4.45 forty. Just take a peek at the video External linkfor a minute or two and you can see why we've been recruiting this kid for a while now. There's a reason why the WSU coaches have been frequenting Gprep games and why they've jokingly been asking the Prep Head Coach to pull Sankey at half so no one else will "discover" him.

Let's take a look at how this helps beyond just getting a touted recruit on board:

Weekly Recruiting Update
Written by EC Rules

Paul Wulff and staff just closed out a fantastic week of recruiting. They were able to acquire one and possibly two starters for the offensive line and acquire the commitment of what was the top guy they had on their board at the offensive guard position.

Let's take a look at the guys they locked down:
