The Unfiltered Truth- WSU Quarterbacks
Written by OpenToClose
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 11:21

No position has been more painful to watch the past two seasons than Quarterback. It seems like a century ago when we were hoping that Gary Rogers would be the next version of Matt Kegel. Since then we've seen two broken backs at the position and two season ending knee injuries. It's enough to make a Coug fan yearn for the days of Paul Mencke and Steve Birnbaum.

Nevertheless, real hope emerged last year when Jeff Tuel entered the game down in Los Angeles against USC. He showed the spark and energy and playmaking ability that had left town with Alex Brink. He completed nearly 60% of his passes as a true freshmen. He got 121 pass attempts in last season which essentially equates to about five full games of experience. Now we'll get to see whether he has taken another step in the weight room heading into Spring camp. He played at 207 pounds last season and there is no question that he'll need to be closer to 220 next season if he wants to finish the year. Jeff Tuel has the potential to be the next star Quarterback at WSU and it could come as early as next season if he stays slightly ahead of the curve on his progression. Marshall Lobbestael is a nice backup. Best case scenario is that he's WSU's version of Seneca Wallace. Only play him if Tuel is injured or we are blowing a team out. He is not a quarterback you can win with consistently in the Pac-10. This Spring should be all about Jeff Tuel.

The Unfiltered Truth- WSU Running Backs
Written by OpenToClose
Saturday, 06 March 2010 14:41

As we continue our look at WSU football going into Spring practice we focus on running backs today. The story here is somewhat similar to the wide receivers. Some talent, little quality depth, and hopes placed on the young or injured stepping up in a big way.

We'll try to do our preview a touch differently. We'll cover on what to watch for, what you should be freaked out if it happens, and what you should hope will happen for each unit. We'll start out with wide receivers!

The Unfiltered Truth- WSU Wide Receivers

Lots of spring previews are going to be coming your way. Beware what you read. It's hard to get a gauge of who is playing well when the team is playing against each other. We'll give you our perspective good and bad and leave it unfiltered. If you want unbridled optimism this probably isn't your series of previews. If you want to be nega-Coug then this isn't for you either. Instead we'll bring you what we think is objective truth on each unit going into Spring Practice. Then when practice kicks off we'll bring you as much insight we can from our guys that will be observing most of the practices and talking to various people connected to the program.

We'll try to do our preview a touch differently. We'll cover on what to watch for, what you should be freaked out if it happens, and what you should hope will happen for each unit. We'll start out with wide receivers.

Bill Moos and the fundraising factor
Written by EC Rules
Thursday, 25 February 2010 23:01

I was just in the middle of writing a fundraising article with some thinking around what Bill Moos is likely to do early in his term. It turns out that I didn't need to. Cougcenter absolutely nails how it's likely going to play out early on in Bill Moos's tenure. Read the article here: CougCenter External link

The most provocative thing we might see from Bill Moos over the Summer is what he decides to do with Phase III. Yes, we picked up about 400-450 deposits on seats for suites/loge/club areas but we also picked up significant dollar donation commitments for the project. I also know from speaking with our fundraising arm quite frequently, the sentiment is that they would be able to call a handful of donors tomorrow and close the gap on any dollar donations required to get Phase III done. The hang-up has always been demand for club seats. Just not enough people interested right now.

If they shelve Phase III and look to re-purpose dollar commitments from Phase III you might be looking at anywhere between $5-10 million dollars in money available for facilities upgrades. Just think about what might be done to upgrade locker rooms, practice facilities, and the weight room with that sort of money. It's a very interesting strategy. With prices the way they are right now, you could build out facilities that would compete with the very best in the Pac-10 across a number of areas.

At any rate, do yourself a favor and read the CougCenter External link article. Then think about how you might set aside a couple of bucks over the next few months for Bill when he makes that call for all of us to step up.

The Bill Moos Saga - A Story of Excellence
Written by EC Rules

We wrote a piece earlier asking whether the  AD hiring process that WSU was employing was idiocy or genius. Clearly, it was genius. Bill Moos will be announced as our next Athletic Director at a press conference tomorrow. Dr. Elson Floyd conducted the most public job search I have ever seen in my life. The typical timeline for hiring an AD is usually measured in months. Dr. Floyd got it done in a matter of days. Speed is one thing. But if you hire a stooge it really doesn't matter how quickly you do it.

Bill Moos is no stooge. This is like the Pittsburgh Pirates signing Alex Rodriguez. It's like the St. Louis Rams signing Peyton Manning. Make no mistake, we face significant challenges over the next couple of seasons and we just signed the only guy that is likely an upgrade over Jim Sterk that would be willing to take the job.

So, let's put out a report card but let's do it a little different. Let's grade out the process now that it has played out, the candidate that will be filling the job and let's look at his first 90 days in office.

We'll start with the process. How did WSU do in conducting it's job search?

Has anyone ever seen a more unusual hiring process? It's looking like Dr. Floyd was so public with things from hour one because he was bound and determined to do everything required to show Bill Moos that he was badly wanted and needed at his alma mater.

How did it all break down? Hit the read more button to find out:
