Interesting stuff in the Grippi blog today. Looks like Rankin and Buckley are on track to qualify. Also, a few thoughts on the JC QB visiting and the progress of David Gilbertson.
I'm absolutely pumped to see that Rankin is likely headed up in January. The guy was a high-major recruit last year. The type of dude that conference title contenders felt they could take and plug right into their dend rotation. Remember Luis Vazquez? He was a commit to us and then went ASU when Akey left and became an instant starter. Rankin is that type of player. Anyways, can you picture a three man rotation at dend of Long, Kooyman, and Rankin? Instant Pac-10 quality pass rush.....and the scary thing is by next year they'd all likely be pushing 260. Our pass rush might show the most improvement of any spot if that's the case. Lots can happen but that's worth being excited about.
I'm not as hopeful on Buckley. Mostly because a dude "feeling really good" about his score doesn't really do much for me. I'll be really excited about this if/when he does get that score. I bet he plays next year with his size which would be huge for our dtackle rotation. Next year you're looking at Turpin, Laurenzi, Spitz, Wolfgramm, Clayton, Buckley and I feel like I'm missing someone else. That's a six man rotation for dtackle. FINALLY, we'll have full depth there.
The best thing about that is that Rankin and Buckley are both in this January. They get a full nine months in the lifting program and they get Spring ball. Huge advantage come Fall.
I wonder what the situation is with Mastin. He was a supposed speed rusher that needed to add some weight. It would be nice to get him in the program and lifting as soon as possible. If you have those three show up in January then you've got an excellent class of grayshirts for this year and a great trio to add to this upcoming class.
It's also interesting to see the thoughts on QB. The first public mention of a possible Lobster transfer. Also, very interesting to note that Gilbertson could potentially be good enough to earn a schollie. That's fantastic. The Gilbertson scenario is perfect for depth at the QB position. He'll likely stick around for five years and we wouldn't really have to worry to much about having him split snaps in games to stay happy. Another mention of the JC QB coming in for a visit. It will be interesting to see if we decide to offer him and give Gilbertson a schollie. The bell tolls for thee Marshall. Either way you cut it, looks like things could be clearing out for Tuel and it's looking like a great scenario to redshirt Halliday.
